My experience starts in 1994, although I have been drawing since I was very young. I began my apprenticeship at Las Vegas Tattoo Co. in Las Vegas, Nevada under Doc Dog and his crew. It was more like prospecting for a big club than actually apprenticing. I learned most of the basics there, for the first three years I worked, before moving on to another shop, Tattoo Revolution.

Tattoo Revolution was owned by Joshua South, who before he had opened the shop, had been tattooing for about twelve years over in Germany. Josh did not use a thermal fax machine, so everything was done with a sharpie marker directly on the skin. This is where I learned a great deal more about art, in every aspect.

After about a year and a half, I left Tattoo Revolution due to the lack of business. The art was great, but the business wasn’t run very well. I had bills of my own! I began tattooing over at Desert Ink Tattoo, owned by a fellow artist named Ray, who I worked with over at Las Vegas Tattoo Co. I believe I learned more there, concerning my art, due to a bit of inspiration from another tattoo artist, named Fred.

Fred is an artist who has a lot of experience in all different forms of art, which helped me to look at what I was doing and how I might be able to expand upon it even further. I worked at Desert Ink Tattoo for approximately another year and a half, before I decided to open up Iron Horse Tattoos.

Iron Horse Tattoos has given me a lot of new experiences, both positive and negative, which I have learned from and grown with. I am always looking to expand my knowledge concerning art and tattooing, on the whole. Over the nine years that Iron Horse Tattoos has been open, my love for the art of tattooing has grown exponentially, and I cannot think of another medium I would rather work in today.

Fifteen years and counting…

Born and raised in Lancaster, CA; Rick has always had an eye for the arts in one way or another. Starting with early interests in architecture; with a main influence from Frank Lloyd Wright, Rick gradually broadened his interests to ceramics and then to paint and paper. Graduating from Antelope Valley College with a degree in mathematics and a minor in ceramics it was a far stretch before Rick decided his favorite medium was the skin of others. In 2000 Rick moved from Lancaster to Las Vegas continuing his love for art; but, not until 2004 was he accepted as an apprentice at Iron Horse Tattoos, under the mentorship of Tony Otto. With the influences of his mentor, and other artists such as Ryan Downie and Noble, Rick decided his favored style was that of traditional tattoo art form and has steered his career onto that specific path. With other direct influences, specifically that from other co-workers, Rick decided to apprentice in the form of piercing and body modification in 2005. A couple years into his chosen career, Rick took on the name of Sexy Rick given to him by a very loyal and entertaining customer; this being his business name and the name we all know him by today. Currently, Sexy Rick is working at balancing the many facets of the industry; by furthering his skills as a tattooist and piercer, combined with a new hobby of building tattoo machines. His over all goal is to sell and create a name for himself in the building and tattooing field. He has also chosen to go back to school and is currently working on a degree in photography and a Bachelors in Fine Arts to further his skills and growth as an artist and tattoo artist. He recently went to Seattle. They let him fly the plane, with his beard. If you can guess where he has Louis Vuitton at on his body you win an energy drink.

My experience in art started at a young age, through school at first. Then, I started to find myself drawing whatever I could, whenever I could, wherever I could, when I had the free time. I’ve done some experimenting with other mediums, such as sculpting, but I find that I’m drawn to painting with oils, acrylics and water colors.

Naturally, I started to think about expanding my horizons in the world of art, which led me to tattooing. I sought out an apprenticeship at Iron Horse Tattoos, after being tattooed there several times. After being accepted, I apprenticed under Tony Otto, and I have been there now for the past four years.

I try to saturate myself with as much art as possible to further expand my knowledge, which will in turn aid me in producing better tattoos. I personally believe that you can never know too much, and should always be learning. With so many amazing and talented veteran artists in this industry, I look forward to growing and learning over the years to come.
